Healing by primary intention
A wound will heal by primary intention if the edges of the wound can be approximated together. Some form of wound closure is normally employed to keep the wound edges closed. Common ways of achieving closure and stability of the wound edges include adhesive strips, sutures or super glue.
Advantages of healing by primary intention
Approximation and stabilisation will allow the edges of a wound to heal directly into each other. In primary healing the process is fairly rapid, normally wound edges will be closed with sufficient tensile strength to remove the sutures after 7-10 days. However, it takes much longer than this to restore full strength to the wound, even after 2 weeks the wound only has 20% of full strength. If the edges of a wound are closed, the surface area of the wound is reduced. This means that there will be a minimal amount of scar tissue formed, giving good cosmetic and functional results. As the wound is closed, there is less opportunity for secondary colonisation or infection to enter the wound from outside sources of microbiological contamination.
Potential problems with primary intention
Because the wound edges are closed, there is the possibility that foreign material or bacteria may be enclosed within the wound. This will allow any bacteria present to multiply and lead to wound infection with possible abscess formation. Also the presence of foreign material can lead to future complications such as pain and damage to tissues. If foreign material can be removed before closure, this particular complication may be prevented; this is one reason why wound exploration is so vital. If the wound is likely to be contaminated with bacteria from the implement which made the wound, then again it is unwise to close the wound, unless the practitioner feels they are able to adequately wash away the contamination with irrigation or other wound cleaning procedures. When primary healing is not possible, or is not advisable, healing by secondary intention will be used.

This is a hidden gem in Jeju Island! Definitely make your way here if you can spare about an hour or so. After a long touristy day, Jeju Light Garden, was one of the places that was still open late! When we arrived, we were greeted by a nice gentleman who immediately wanted to take photos for us…my husband was like…nahhh uhh but he had no choice hahaha
It was a Tuesday night, and there were maybe 2-3 other couples…basically empty! So it was nice to have the garden all to ourselves. It’s a small place where you can explore within 40 mins and there’s also an inside section where there are props, photo booths, and arcade to be entertained with.
At the end, you’re allowed to choose only 1 photo for them to print for free! Loved it! Highly recommend for a short night visit.

It’s the only one of its kind in Southwest Florida and it can be found in Lee County. A multi place hyperbaric oxygen chamber offers treatment to patients suffering from a range of illnesses.
According to Marcus Scharre, wound care supervisor with Lee Memorial Health System, once inside the chamber patients have between two to six hours where they can sit, lie, read, or watch a movie. “It’s a painless thing. There are no needles. There’s no pain involved. They just breathe oxygen.”
The multi place hyperbaric oxygen chamber can hold up to seven people inside. Outside, health experts are monitoring the patient’s breathing.
“They are inside breathing 100 percent oxygen under pressure, 2.4 times the pressure we’re at right now. Breathing that under pressure saturates the plasma portion, liquid portion of your blood. Plasma is what transports oxygen and nutrients out to the cells,” said Scharre.
The treatment occurs under 45 feet of pressure. The purpose is to heal wounds caused by diabetic ulcers or radiation. It can also be used to treat heart disease or cerebral palsy. Health experts say the chamber is even used in emergencies, like carbon monoxide poisoning or scuba diving accidents. The treatment also helps enhance immune systems, stimulate growth of new capillaries, and reduce swelling.
“What the patient will physically feel is the pressure change in their ears and a temperature change. It kind of gets warm when we reach our pressure depth and it cools off when we come back up” said Scharre.
A patient will typically have treatment from four to six weeks. Scharre says the more treatments in a row, the better off the patient will be.
